Hydroponics Garden First Harvest

Harvesting Hydroponic Lettuce

Hydroponic Lettuce

Yep, less than 30 days and we harvested our first lettuce from the hydroponic garden tonight! The lettuce was from seed that I planted in the seed tray back in the  beging of April, then moved them to the hydroponic rails a week after that. So they’ve been in the rails with a continuous Grow Formula running through the pipes for about 3 weeks (a little less).

They were getting kind of big so we figured its time to make a salad. Unlike soil lettuce I didn’t pop out the whole head and chop at it. Instead I went to the largest plants and remove the outer leaves, working my way in to the center till all thats left is a few small leaves and the stem.

If you leave this as it is in the solution it will hopefully keep growing, giving you more tasty leaves to crunch on 🙂 You can chalk it up as another advantage of hydroponics. You get to keep growing getting more yield out of a plant than if you would have in soil. I harvested I believe 3 of the larger heads of lettuce and a bit off the speckled lettuce.

Unfortunately the rest of the salad is still coming from our local produce store but we are getting there, soon to be self efficient in the salad department. Couple days age I noticed a couple of the tomatoes are developing. I’m currently working on a small cloner/nursery aeroponics tub so I can move the seedlings to it to get a bit stronger before moving them out to the greenhouse systems. I think they will do better transiting this was, little less shock. So we will have the cherry tomatoes out there in a couple weeks. I think I also want to do grape tomatoes 🙂

Needless to say the salads taste amazing with the fresh picked lettuce to add to it. Tried it with a new Raspberry Vinaigrette  which was awesome.

What have you harvested so far this year?
